African Chokwe Mask
African Chokwe Mask
This mask was made by the Chokwe ethnic group who reside in the South-Western Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It was worn during initiation of young men into adulthood. The mask is framed by cloth made by raffia fibers and the top of the head is covered with raffia cloth from which four prongs emerge, each wrapped tightly with blackened cord. A close cropped black beard decorates the chin.
